We were graciously surrounded by friends and family before and after the loss. Many dear friends stepped in to cover the details of childcare, meals, memorial service, and so much more. One very dear friend was like the commander of an army of help–organizing the troops, acting like an umbrella, deflecting as much weight off of me as possible. (Thank you Cheryl!) I would have drowned in it all, had it not been for the amazing community of support around me. This “surrounding of community” was also felt in hospice as friends came to play and sing and sit and be near. We felt it at the memorial service as many dear friends gave their time and talents for the service and so many came from far and wide to show their love and sympathy. And we felt it at the “camp house” (our woodsy retreat behind the house), as we sang songs of praise around the fire.
Those times made me think of the incredible blessing of community in our lives. It made me think of what Heaven might be like one day; not only the unbelievable experience of being face-to-face with our loving God, but also the experience of having perfect fellowship with one another. No weirdness, or insecurity or fear; just amazing connection and delight being with each other. And of course not only that, but it will be the long-awaited, blessed reunion with dear ones who have crossed the finish line first. It definitely will be “some kind of gathering!”
Some Kind of Gathering
It will be so good to see you, my dear friend
Oh how the time is drifting so slow down here.
Many miles to travel, many roads yet to bend,
Missing you as the moments turn to years.
But my heart looks to the time, when the ache will be no more.
Happy ever after is what I’m waiting for…
It’s gonna be some kind of gathering,
A “glad-to see you” once again.
Gonna be some kind of wonderful
Oh, I’m gonna run to meet ya
Where everything is beautiful, glory, shining in it’s full
Finally at the place where we’ll “taste and see”
That the Lord is good—so good.
Oh the stories that we’ll share, all the songs we’ll sing,
Maybe gathered round a campfire as we praise the King of Kings,
Singing “Holy Holy and Worthy is the Lamb…”
Who knows, maybe later, we’ll roast s’mores with good old Abraham.
And the dear ones who have gone before,
We’ll take their hands and hit the dance floor. It’s gonna be….
While you’re here and breathing breath,
Get your ticket while they’re left,
For one day the ticket counter will be closed.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son,
So hop on that glory train before your day is done!
It’s gonna be some kind of gathering,
A “glad-to see you” once again.
Gonna be some kind of wonderful
Oh, I’m gonna run to meet ya
Where everything is beautiful, glory, shining in it’s full
Finally at the place where we’ll “taste and see”
That the Lord is good—so good.
